Who: Hawks & You
Status: Open
Where: Various Locations
What: MANTA Board Quests
Warnings: Thanks to Closing Loose Ends, I would expect violence and bloodshed, unless everyone is real cooperative which seems unlikely. A rare chance to see the dark side of Hawks. If he is pressed about this, there may be more. I’ll update accordingly.
Glory In The Hole
[ Hawks enters the craftsman’s store after following the request on the MANTA board, and having listened diligently to the instructions, he sets to work gathering materials. He doesn’t need a charm like this, as far as he knows, but it would be nice to share one with the crew. With all the heat and flame involved, Hawks find an empty spot in a cubby hole and much of his feathers start pulling out of his wings to pile up there, leaving him with very small wings on his back. He just doesn’t want to drag the other feathers into a potential health hazard.
That’s when he’ll be caught out and find himself turning to greet whoever has walked in to join him. ]
Trying this out too? The different coloured glass pieces are over there. [ Not at all shockingly, Hawks has selected reds and oranges. ]
Paint The Town ROYGBIV
[ Unsurprisingly, Hawks has never done this, and he has no real artistic talent, but he’s going to give it all. The selection of graffiti paints has him picking up a spray can of of silver paint. Maybe he can outline something? ]
Hey. [ He half-whispers to the person next to him. ] What are you going to draw?
Tara-Tam Deepcroft 2
[ The noise is unsettling. Not the fact it’s ghostly, or the fact that Tara-Tam had been vacant last time he was here, nor is it the volume – Hawks can’t pinpoint where the noise is. That’s downright disturbing.
He stands in the entrance with his brows furrowed, he’s even got his earphones to try and help him but no, nothing. It’s just...noise. Ambient noise almost. ]
What is going on in this place? [ He’s awfully focused, most likely someone catching his attention will startle him. ]
Eggscort Duty
[ Okay so Hawks isn’t exactly swimming in gold to donate, so that’s out, but he can defend the hoard from anyone who would come to line their pockets during this opportune time.
He sidles up to whoever is crouching down, sifting through the pile. ]
Hello! [ He sounds cheerful enough but he’s looming over them. ] What do you think you’re doing?
Cat Kneads
[ Hawks is a hero. Not just a hero, he’s the number two hero and that’s not without the skills behind it – but honestly, this is the worst mission. He was chasing a cat that happened to be wearing a hat, but that’s not the problem.
The cat is a cat and when he dove to try and get it, the cat has turned around and started attacking his wings. ]
I can’t... stop that! [ Hawks pulls himself up and starts trying to bat at his wings, but that cat sure is digging their claws into what presumably they believe to be their prey. ]
Who is catching who here?!
[ If he’s turning around in a circle, trying to get a cat off of him, it’s definitely because he means to. ]
Closing Loose Ends
[ Hawks was one of those who had been captured in this crystallization scheme. He does not care about the personal slight – he cares about the fact they hurt so many people. It makes him mad, and so when the bounties start showing up, he snatches them off the board without a word, ready to take flight.
If he’s not claiming a bounty page, he’s already in pursuit, landing in random seedy looking places, chasing down an alleyway.
Oh he could catch them alright, but the way he’s behaving is more like a predator who is playing with his food. He’ll still do the heroic thing, but giving them a head start, toying with them...well that’s hardly worth the suffering they inflicted on others.
Hawks is coming for them, one way or another. ]

[ don't forgive her for how she bursts out laughing at his claim, one hand smacks at his knees as though she needs something to hold onto. ]
Get! Real!
[ the tenrec draws back, her other hand coming to her eyes to wipe away any tears as she looks up at hawks. ]
You think I'm afraid of bloodshed or somethin'? I was made for that.
[ "surge" was a product to kill and replace, nothing more, nothing less. it's her own desire to be a hero that she tries to stray from it. but sometimes, killing comes too easy.
however, her expression darkens as she looks at the other properly. ]
What I care about is if you're gunna let people like that go.
no subject
However, now he's going to be blunt. ] No. They will face whatever passes for Paladin justice or they will face me. Those are the options. Letting them go is not on the table.
[ The Paladins are equally likely to execute them here, he knows this. If they swept it under the rug and did nothing? He wouldn't accept that either. ]
I am not someone they want to meet. [ He has to make the offer, or else he'd just be an assassin or a murderer, and that's not what he wants to be. ]
no subject
[ if this is during the whales, or those that were kidnapped, unfamiliar faces but she knows what she's said and what she'd do for others who struggled. she knows what she would do for herself who has been done wrong because others never got rid of the problem. that's something she can't let happen again. ]
Huh? Paladin justice? [ get real, who was the one that said both the paladins and corsairs were corrupt? ] You gotta handle them yourself, because no one else can handle the decision when it comes to things like this.
[ corrupt means it could work in their favor, but are the killing them for the right means, or will they be another group that's let go to cause more issues.
that too is something she can't let happen. ]
Be scary, I don't care. Just dont make the wrong decision. Besides... they should suffer the same way others had.
no subject
I'm acting in the capacity of a hero, not an assassin. I have to extend the offer or I'm no better than anyone else who carelessly takes lives. However, I don't forsee that going well, and I'm prepared to offer the consequences.
[ He's wary of this 'new leaf' they've turned over, but he holds no authority. He can't just make up his own laws and justice standards. That wouldn't go over very well. ]
I'm not a sadist. Besides, a quick kill isn't to spare them suffering, it's to avoid complications. [ Alright, that's a bit more assassin-y than he should be. ]
I haven't even begun to be scary yet.
no subject
[ she only knows what she knows, but she can tell not everyone was happy with what happened. whales died, azul was kidnapped and couldn't defend himself, and among other things are in her head that she can't flush out. if it was her way, she'd kill them all to prevent it from happening again. ]
Geez, no better than an assassin is a shit take. [ sometimes it's life or death, and that's not something the kidnappers and killers though about at that time. they did what made sense to them. ] You should see it from the sides that have to fight or kill to survive one day, wonder if you'd still call'em assassins.
[ well, surge doesn't know because that's not what she'd label herself, it's really all she's had so far. it's only recently that she's tried to switch things up.
with a click of her tongue... ]
Are they around here, whoever ya lookin' for? I can look this whole place up and down by the time you snap ya finger. Then ya can quick kill'em or do whatever.
no subject
Nope, I have other leads.
[ Now the feather in her hand makes a little wiggling move, an attempt to get free. ]
no subject
No! I'm gunna make sure you do this right! I'm goin' where you're goin'.
[ surge doesn't have the ability to fly like he does, if he wanted, he could probably get away from her with ease.
this feather she thinks will keep him close, probably will draw itself to him, so it's best to keep hold of. ]
Get to movin'. We don't... want to waste time.
[ she knows that feeling too, how much heroes chit and chat only to make unfortunate moves later on because there was never enough time at that moment. ]
no subject
Do that again and I'm leaving you behind. I can sever the connection to that feather.
[ Hawks is ridiculously fast, he could get away, but there's not exactly harm in having her tag along for now. It's not the first time he's tasted electricity through his feathers but he's not a big fan of it. ]
no subject
[ proud as always, the tenrec is already following after him not because she wants to be a nuisance, but because she wants to see this through. the girl isn't responsible for what happened, but she wants to help in some way. ]
'Sides, that was a small taste, hell, I wouldn't even call it a taste... a sample.
[ probably not that either given a sample is a pretty sizeable piece within itself. ]
...What I really got is for the people who fucked up. Y'know, lots of people are still hurtin' and I hate seein' that shit even though I avoided it.
no subject
I'm not weak to electricity, in case you were getting ideas. [ No more than the next person. She wouldn't be a terrible match up in a fight. ]
I know they are, that's why I want to take care of it. Other people shouldn't have to deal with this part either, when I'm capable of doing it.
[ For the greater good, he's willing to dirty his hands. ]
no subject
[ her grip on the feather is tighter not to cause harm, but she normally has to redirect her feelings somewhere. she thinks he's an idiot, wanting to give these people a chance or he'll look bad. that's what sonic did, gave chance after chance after chance which only led to a horrible outcome.
she doesn't want that to happen, she doesn't want to see those same actions. ]
Why didn't you save everyone when it first happened?
[ was he too captured? ]
no subject
I saved those I could from the auction, when I first became aware of the trafficking ring, and helped secure and arrest a lot of small fries that were turned over at the time. When things escalated, I went for the sake of investigation which did not go as expected. [ He presses his lips together. Loathe as he is to admit it. ] I was captured and I did what I could to be an annoyance so I would take more than my share of their ire, and protect those around me to the best of my abilities.
Information still came to light though. Now it's about mopping up the stragglers.
no subject
I hate people like that. Those that don't care what their actions do for the future, how many people are hurt and go around actin' as if it was all fun and games. That's when you know they're selfish and only care for themselves. It's why they took advantage of alla'ya. Slim pickins, easy to work with.
[ besides, these people have a choice as both him and her look, they should choose the best option they have. because they won. they killed, they kidnapped, and yet they're still going. ]
If they wanted to, these people would stop... here's their chance, but they don't want it.
no subject
[ Either way, he's sure they won't agree either. That's what he's here for. ]
If they don't come in willingly that's it. There's no third option. They'll either die through me, or likely die by hanging. It's not going to be pretty, which is why I went alone. Not everyone feels the need to watch something like that.
no subject
[ turning over a new leaf is a concept, one she doesn't trust, but maybe that's the initial step before becoming better. whatever it is, she'll handle it as they go. it's why the girl takes a few steps. ]
Surprising, you need to branch out. [ he even doing this alone is a wonder when there's all sorts of individuals that would love the chance to get their hands on the people who did this. ] Tons of people that would like to do some bloodshed because of what happened.
no subject
It's human nature to want vengeance. But wanting someone to suffer, and actually killing them are two very different things. No matter how deserving they may be in the mind of the person, it will still weigh on the conscience. You're still removing any opportunity they have to turn their life around. You're causing pain to every single person that knows them. That's why killing is considered a serious crime.
I both understand and am willing to deal with those consequences, and am willing to spare others that fate. That's why I'm doing it. There's no need for someone to get their hands dirty if they've avoided this so far.
no subject
[ she responds quickly, a glare shot in the man's direction. ]
If they wanted to change, they'd come out, they wouldn't be hiding or continuing these quick schemes. They're making the decision to keep this stunt up.
[ she's not removing anything, she knows what it is to be a bad person, she is the bad person trying to turn themselves around. she chose to make ammends, to be a hero, to act like this because she didn't want that life anymore.
she didn't hide nor did she wait for anyone to come after her. ]
Did you factor that in?
[ her gaze leaves from him at the sound of something dropping with a heavy thud, a snap of wood, and the quick shuffle of shoes that squeak against the ground.
she doesn't dash to see, she's sure they'll come across it on their own. ]
no subject
Taking a life is always taking away potential. The potential for harm, the potential for good. You should always take that into account.
[ He sighs. ]
That said, this place does not exactly have a robust justice system. We can't just lock them up for thirty years and let them change their minds. Protecting the public takes precedence.
[ At the sound, several feathers shoot out of his wings to go investigate, although he doesn't change his pace. ]
I factored that in. I'm fairly certain these people are not sorry. You're not usually dealing with crimes of this level though. That, and people's motivations are rarely black and white.
no subject
[ in fact, she's a life in question because of poor judgements, of allowing unresolved trouble to fester. she doesn't need anyone to tell her about the potential taken away for that was stripped from her from the very start. ]
But there are others that don't care, so I'm on the side of get rid of them problem. Completely.
[ that will never change, whatever world the other comes from has a better set-up for criminals and such, because where she's from its either live or die. it's why she rolls her eyes at the jail thing, not like it matters. ]
If they're not sorry, if they're capable of doin' this shit again, why are you protecting them?
[ there's another squeak of shoes, a few more boxes broken along a thin alleyway. the feathers will catch the scene like this, a red substance awith glass broken inside of the crates, and messy, comical footsteps along the ground making off in three directions.
if one feather inspects what's been shattered, the first box is a liquid what it's used for is hard to tell but its a scent that one make someone woozy, but the second seems to have bones inside of various sizes, and the third appears to have familiar jewelry, the same that some whales were fashioned into. ]
no subject
[ Hawks huffs a little bit. ] Why do you see it as me protecting them? I want them to stop and I'm going to ensure they do. Offering them a chance to face justice instead of just being killed isn't me showing support for them. It's the right thing to do.
[ His sight is echolocation, so he can't make out those details. He can tell no one is there, and that there are broken items, so he's heading over there to check it out in the first place. At the same time he exhales. ]
Geeze. There are reporters who ask me less questions than you.
no subject
[ no need for surge to hide it, she recalls his face. ]
You asked hella questions, don't tell me you're a hypocrite now!
[ with a roll of her eyes, she follows where he goes, and tries to remember what was said before. ]
Anyway, it's information at the end of the day to answer questions I got. Ain't that what you said?
[ as they make it there, they'll come upon the mess. surge doesn't move near it, her lips pursed into a straight line as she let's him go investigate. ]
no subject
I try not to be a hypocrite. [ She is, however, pestering him. It doesn't seem like she's going to take that as a sign to stop and so he's resigned to it. ]
I did say that, although you seem very interested in hero ethics. [ At least it was an observation, not an indication he will actually stop answering her questions.
Hawks doesn't hesitate though, leaving the chatter behind for a moment while he crouches down to investigate what's fallen. ] Potent. [ He mutters at the strong smell. Despite that, he looks at the bones and frowns, looking not at the foot prints - he'll deal with that in a minute - but rather where the boxes could've fallen from. ]
no subject
if he glances up, there's a glass window left ajar which could give the idea they were pushed from there for someone to catch. the amount of boxes that have fallen means there must have been about three or four people here before dashing off.
...maybe!
as for surge, she's looking towards the window then to him. ]
Up or down?
[ because the windows is up, and the footprints are down, but she's not against splitting up either. ]
no subject
It's going to be both. They're not going to get away from me. They're on foot, I have wings.
[ They can run but they can't hide. He does send feathers in through that window though, trying to get a bit of a look around. He'll be able to get a sense of the general layout, and if there's any signs of life, but after he's done with this look, he'll be taking flight. ]
no subject
[ with the wings, but it's not like they can stop people.. or can they, she's not used to this. she doesn't wait for him though, surge walking off on the lower end to follow the tracks left behind as the other searches the building.
as those feathers search, it's quick, a black smokescreen, boxes falling over the ones that are visible within the smog to trap them. scuffling.
... ]
